In my recent recipe post for “Dasheen Balls” I shared that I haven’t always been a huge fan of what we here in the West Indies colloquially refer to as ‘Provisions’. I do have a weakness for cassava though, and breadfruit! Still, I’m slowly coming around to dasheen, and eddoes and green banana are still more miss than hit for my palate (I’m working on it though!). That’s why I would love to know which of the below are your faves! Your answers will give me a better idea of which provision-based recipes you may be excited to see in future posts

	1. Trinidad Black Cake (recipe) Black Cake in Trinidad is a Christmas tradition. Made predominantly of alcohol drenched prunes, currants and raisins, variations abound
	2. Mango Cake (recipe) This mango cake is very light and elegant in appearance, especially when topped with a dash of icing sugar. The batter is topped with brown sugar and butter which crystallizes to form a delicate streusel topping and the slivers of ripe mango settle themselves throughout the batter forming succulent counterpoints of sweetness.
	3. Espresso Cake (recipe) Light, moist and incredibly intense in flavour this recipe for Espresso Cake hides one little ’secret’, wholewheat flour! If you’ve never tried wholewheat flour in a dessert recipe I strongly suggest that you give it a try. It adds a whole other level of richness without any of the heaviness that you might expect.
	4. Upside Down Chocolate Pudding (recipe) The recipe was a cinch to put together and seems to be practically foolproof in nature with results that are so decadent and beautiful that no one has to be any the wiser. The pudding had a thin biscuit crust that covered a cake like fluffy layer that gradually got denser as it reached the thick creamy fudge like frosting on the bottom… YUM!
	5. Fudgy Chocolate Cake ‘Brownies’ (recipe) This recipe wins on every front. It calls for very simple basic ingredients (most of which should already be in your pantry), it takes no time to put together, cleanup is minimal and the taste is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Amazingly enough, these brownies only get better the longer they sit. Fresh out of the oven they are light, airy, and oh so chocolatey… but as they sit they slowly get moister and fudgier… oh the decadence.

Better late than never, here are the top 10 posts of 2009.

	1. Trinidad Corn Soup with Cornmeal Dumplings (recipe) Corn soup is a street food favorite here in Trinidad, especially at carnival time when vendors ply large pots of it that they spoon into styrofoam cups outside of fetes and clubs. It’s also popular as a Saturday lunch.
	2. Top 10 Chicken Recipes on Trinigourmet.com You’ve voted for these chicken recipes with your clicks and your comments! Faves include Oven BBQ Chicken, Jamaican Fricassee Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, and (naturally) my father’s recipe for Trinidad Pelau.
	3. A Beer Is A Carib… (video) The lure of nostalgia must be really strong as the popularity of this 1989 commercial definitely had you clicking and wanting more!
	4. Raw Vegan Brownies (recipe) 2009 was the year I started dabbling in raw food recipes. Although I never became a purist I have maintained the shift towards fresh ingredients and conscious eating that it encourages. Raw food desserts are surprisingly rich in flavour and comforting in texture, something that this recipe has successfully proven.
	5. Top 5 Cake Recipes on Trinigourmet.com 2009 was also the year I gave in (too easily) to my sweet tooth. I made a record amount of desserts (thanks to memberships in Tuesdays with Dorie and Daring Bakers) and my waistline unfortunately expanded to prove it! Recipes that can be found at this post include Trinidad Black Cake, Espresso Cake and, one of my personal faves, Upside Down Chocolate Pudding.
	6. Trinigourmet’s Top 10 Recipes for September 2009 I was a little puzzled as to why this particular roundup made the Top 10 list for 2009, but a look at its contents revealed that it included some of my favorite culinary concoctions of last year, including Tridoshic Dal and Cranberry Almond Slaw.
	7. Easy Hot Spiced Mexican Chocolate (recipe) I suspect that my readers in colder climes are behind the strong end of year showing of this recipe, but maybe I’m wrong
	8. Banana Papaya Smoothie (recipe) This is one of my favourite raw smoothies. Thick, creamy and brimming with nutritional goodness. You can almost feel your blood being infused with vitamins and antioxidants with every sip!
	9. Tiramisu Cake (recipe) You know a recipe is good, no… great, when everytime you prepare it people offer you money to make it -just for them-! I wish I could take all the credit for how amazing this cake tastes, but that honour really mnust go to Dorie Greenspan, its creator
	10. Mexican Turtle Cheesecake with Banana Rum Sauce (recipe) Without a doubt this is the creamiest and smoothest cheesecake that I’ve made to date. I had intended to play around with the recipe a little bit more to get the flavours a little more intense, but that never happened. Maybe this year. Until then, I’m glad you all liked it as much as you did!

For over 50 years the Carib Brewery has been producing Carib beer to the delight of Trinis both at home and abroad. I know that for myself seeing a Carib sign in a pub or a bar abroad was enough to make me scream, grab a camera and patronise the establishment

	4. Tridoshic Dal (recipe) This is currently my dal of all dals. For my own personal tastes I added a tad more coconut than would qualify as a ‘garnish’, and I also used an immersion blender at the end to partially puree the liquid. Give it a try and let me know
	5. Indian Doses (recipe) I’ve noticed that gluten-free flours don’t brown up like traditional ones do, so the dosas were a good bit paler than what I’m used to. That didn’t affect the taste though and I really enjoyed how they came out.

	10. 1987 Malta Carib Commercial (video) Malta Carib has been a staple in my home since I was a child. Growing up I felt like quite a ‘big woman’ drinking it from the bottle (I had no idea it was non-alcoholic ). During the 80’s it was promoted not just as an energy booster, but also as an aid for students preparing for exams!

	1. Punch de Creme (recipe) Punch de Creme, is one of Trinidad’s traditional Christmas drinks. It is a rum drink, basically our version of eggnog.
	2. Pumpkin Pone (recipe) This recipe for Pumpkin Pone came from the Naparima Girls High School Cookbookand is cited as being Guyanese in origin.
	3. Sarina’s Curried Potato ‘mini’ Latkes & Bubbly Guava-Ginger Ale The holidays for me mean Hanukkah and Eight days of Candlelit Goodness so I thought what better than latkes? But I couldn’t just do generic latkes. No no no. Being Trini I figured where there’s fried potato, curry and chadon beni shouldn’t be too far behind.
	4. Braised Chicken in Coconut Milk “Opor Ayam” (recipe) The base of the recipe is a floral paste of ground nuts (she used macadamian I used cashew), coriander, tumeric and garlic to which coconut milk is added and allowed to simmer. Skinned chicken pieces are then added to the mixture and allowed to braise gently. Absorbing the flavours and remaining deliciously tender in the process.
	5. Falafel (recipe) Falafel is an item that depending on your part of the world is either par for the course, or an unheard of oddity. Growing up here in Trinidad falafels were not part of my culinary experience, however in the last few years, Syrian-Lebanese eateries have become more and more popular and Middle Eastern fare has become well-loved outside of their original ethnic communities.
	6. Vidalia Onion Fritters (recipe) I first made these fritters as part of last year’s Sukkot menu. They are much sweeter and lighter than one would expect. And the soaking of the onions in the batter ensures that the onion flavour mellows and evenly distributes.
	7. Sardine Pate (recipe) This recipe for Sardine Pate comes from Nigella Lawson and if you don’t like sardines, or know someone who doesn’t I really suggest giving it a try. The lime juice makes sure that the odour is cut, and the generous portion of batter, softens the sardines flavour, blurring it into something more indistinguishable and mouth-satisfyingly creamy.
	8. Arepas (recipe) I love eating arepas when they are piping hot. I slather them with butter, and then add any type of filling that I like. The flavour of an arepa is mild so the addition of salt, and the crusting of the exterior are vital to bring out the subtle corn flavour.
	9. Homemade Tomato Soup (recipe) This recipe from Michael Chiarello is one of my all-time faves for tomato soup. It is so simple and easy to put together. Since I originally made it earlier this year, on a rainy evening, it has become one of my fail-safes for when I get late-night hunger pangs.
	10. Glitter Gelatin Torte (recipe) Shimmering Jello cubes are folded into foamy gelatin, whipped cream, and shredded pineapples. So good! The use of sugar free jello lightened the caloric content, and instead of graham cracker crumbs I made the crust from pulverised corn flakes

Now that I am once again posting on a regular basis I’m going through a backlog of drafts (over 1000!) and wondering what to do with the more ‘time-specific’ ones. Namely reviews of restaurants, special nights and events that were held in the past.
