Is rum kosher? What makes alcohol kosher? Or, what would make it noto kosher?
lilandra - good question!
alcohol is certified kosher when prepared under rabbinical supervision to make sure that no treif or harram(sp) ingredients and/or combinations enter the finished product. We don’t have rabbinical supervision but i’m not too worried about angostura grinding pig lard into the vats… if you hear something though let me know
there are many different philosophical/theoretical schools of judaism and some take kashrut (the laws of kosherness) as also having an ethical dimension. So in that case alcohol that may legally be kosher, may not ethically be kosher depending on the human conditions it was created under, or if the person is an alcoholic or already drunk. what not what not.
Ah! I thought you meant ethical by say if child/slave labour was producing it.
So, if you were in a place with certified alcohol, would you then have the certified one? Or would you drink any?
Lilandra - yeah like child/slave labour… thats what i meant… if it was certified i would, if it wasn’t certified i would too.. but given the choice i would go with certified
