REVIEW: The Roti King ‘Roti Skins’

Dhal Puri Roti Skins

As I’ve previously mentioned here in Trinidad the term ‘roti skin’ is commonly used when referring solely to the roti bread, rather than ‘roti’ which usually refers to a dish of roti bread + fillings/sides. Confusing? Well, it was equally confusing to me to realize that to the rest of the world the word roti meant ‘bread’ and nothing more! Let’s just say it made my first overseas visit to an ‘Indian’ restaurant quite a ’surprise’…

Anyway, like most Trinis we have our preferred providers of the illustrous dhalpuri roti skin, however last month, because she was in a rush, my mother decided to pick up a prepackaged bundle while doing the rest of her shopping at the supermarket.

Her choice? A 4-pack of dhalpuri skins under the moniker of ‘The Roti King’…

Dhalpuri roti skins

Verdict: The skins were papery and dry. The filling was too sparse (I like my dhalpuri to be spilling peas left and right). Worse yet it left my mother and I with that unhappy feeling in your stomach that doesn’t go away for hours. We’ll definitely be avoiding the checkout aisle and sticking to the freshly made stuff in the future!

Oh, poor dears. I’ve never made dhalpuri. Mom makes a good one, but it’s a bit labour intensive and requires all the children being home to form an assembly line. So we order from our local Amin’s in Couva, or something. But yes, plenty dhal spilling out is necessary! And soft and silky like the package says, not dry and papery!!!

In the U.S. most of the time when you ask for roti in a Caribbean restaurant you get the whole dish! This is the case in the Indian restaurants as well where I am at as well. Since I’m half-American, I had no clue that the bread by itself is referred to as roti skin.

I’ve never seen packaged roti, but since reading this I’ll know to skip it! :)

Hi my name is Desronn a relocated Trini here in California and I want to just start of by saying this is absolutely refreshing. I have been trying to find a place to get some bus-up-shot or dalpuri (ah hope ah spell da won right)for the longest while to no avail it seems that the only place that I have gotten any good roti skins in the US is in Brooklyn NY. Now that I know about Carib-Tex I might be spending some money for him to ship me some Roti skins to satisfy my Trini cravings.
