Sarina’s ‘Bang Bang’ Salsa (recipe)

'Bang Bang' Salsa

This recipe went together so quickly and easily. And boy did it pack a punch :) A punch of yum that is! :) I love how the coolness of the lettuce and tomatoes played off of the scotch bonnet’s heat. The combination reminded me of buljol (but without the saltfish). Feel free to use whatever lettuce you may have on hand. I used romaine this time around, because that is what was in the fridge, but next time it will probably be iceberg :)

The title by the way is an homage to the tune of the same name by Dave Koz :D

Sarina’s ‘Bang Bang’ Salsa

4 small red ripe tomatoes, chopped
1/4 cup onion, minced
3 leaves romaine lettuce, shredded
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
2 teaspoons fresh lime juice
1 scotch bonnet pepper, finely choped
Salt

Directions:

Mix all ingredients together. Serve at room temperature.

I wanted to ask you when you became such a foodie?
Also when you went to Smith did you cook a lot? What and how did you eat?
Did you do most of your cooking when you came back to Trini?

  • Sarina said:

Good question… i fell in love with the Food Network while at Smith.. back in ‘97… I had started cooking in ‘96 but only during the summers when the school kitchens were closed… The kitchen staff at Smith cook within each dorm’s kitchens… so it was like going downstairs to dinner, and usually really good stuff. I only really started getting into cooking myself after graduation when I was living in Connecticut…

  • Marsha said:

    Food Network is the best!
I take it you would cook trini food when you were in Connecticut?

  • Sarina said:

i only ever tasted black pudding once.. i thought it was vile… it’s not kosher either so i can ignore it with impunity now :P

  • Sarina said:

strangely i didn’t mind it as a child.. i mean i never loved it but i was able to stomach it… but now i can’t even look at it !
