Supermarket Sugarcane!

Supermarket Sugarcane

Sporadically over the past year I have seen packaged, pre-peeled sugarcane in the produce section of HiLo supermarket. As a child I would love when my mother would come home with fresh sugar cane. My parents would strip it and cut it into small sections which would then be kept in the fridge. It was so refreshing to suck on them after school! I really miss that memory but have been reluctant so far to try this pre-packaged alternative. I’d hate to spend the money they are asking and it not live up to my expectations. Has anyone bought them? What did you think? Yay or Nay?

WHen I was a kid, my grandad would bring home sugarcane and we would soak it in milk before sucking on it. It was grand.

I have tried the package cane it’s not as nice as the fresh ones for me it was missing the sugar but as we know everyone has diffrent taste so you guys buy and judge for yourselves

Thanks! That’s what I wanted to know. i did worry that languishing in plastic on a supermarket shelf was bound to dull the flavours. I like to have an idea of what I’m getting into, cos I’m pretty cautious in my purchases. So now when next I see it I’ll pick one up – with lowered expectations :)

Technically, it’s not fresh if it’s packaged and waits to be purchased days after it has been packaged. I tasted fresh cane in Chaguanas a few years ago. I don’t think the store bought packaged cane would have the same taste.

here in north florida they use cane syrup in many things. i still prefer maple syrup on pancakes but it is a nice variation.

u can sometimes get it fresh around town and it is great to suck on or chew!
