Due to lack of space in our back yard and the need to grow my own crops I usually rent a plot in our city. The city made several designated areas where interested gardeners can do their thing. The cost is about $70 per season and it's full fenced, automatic water sprinklers, tool shed with tools and real community feel. Not only is it great from growing your own crops, it's good to spend time with family and make new friends as well.

BTW, all the greens paces like these are designated as no-chemical areas (well all of Canada now), so you know you're getting healthy and fresh vegetables. You can see some pics here: http://ontarioalive.com/churchill-park-community-...
My recent post Tropical curry beef with potato.

One of the reasons I want to be back in Trinidad, is seeing the family producing things more regularly in our normal sized backyard. Apart from salt, flour and rice, I can make whole meals straight from the yard. So cool. I suppose in theory I could do the same in Guyana, but having a garden would mean needing a gardener (not to mention a house) since it would die in my frequent absences.

Trig - Is the agricultural sector in Spain strong? That may be why... I think I had read that the government there had also helped to buffer the global rise in prices as well?

Nicole - It really is ridiculous the stigma we have here. I remember in Bishop's having classroom gardens in the first year and I really loved seeing and picking the little crops we raised. Unfortunately the program was only for Form 1's and I never thought about it again. They were giving out herb and plant seedlings in the mall a few months ago, the crowd was amazing!!

Well, it took high food prices for some Trinis to get off their lazy you know whats and forget about that idiotic stigma we have about gardening, remnants of slavery and indentureship.
When I was in St Joseph's Convent my classmates used to laugh at me when I brought them/the teachers fresh fruits from my grandparents estate! And make all sorts of statements about me gardening, that were meant to be derogatory.

That's really interesting. Apparently there's a big increase in urban farming in Britain, especially in London. No signs of it over here in Spain, though.
