Win a Copy of “Caribbean Vegan”!

Recently I was delighted to receive a review copy of “Caribbean Vegan: Meat-Free, Egg-Free, Dairy-Free Authentic Island Cuisine for Every Occasion by Barbadian food scientist Taymer Mason.

This giveaway has ended

I first became aware of this insanely talented young woman last year via Twitter and since then I have followed her blog Vegan In The Sun, with a mixture of respect and awe.

I’m not someone who is skeptical of vegan fare, indeed most of my diet is a meatless one (I am what some in the US call a flexitarian), however I have never seen the vegan concept so beautifully and tantalizingly presented within the Caribbean culinary vernacular.

One look at her posts for ‘Vegan Ham‘, ‘Cou cou and Tofish‘ as well as ‘TriniBajan Pelau‘ and you’ll know what I mean.

This weekend I am planning to prepare several recipes from the book. I am particularly interested in her Vegan Black Pudding and Souse (two dishes that I tasted once as a child and never had/wanted again – sorry devotees 🙂 ) I will also be trying several others. After that I look forward to presenting a lengthier review and updating my listings of vegan recipes on this site.

Until then, do check out Taymer’s Blog and Facebook page to stay au courant with all things Caribbean Vegan! And, if you’d like your chance to get your hands on a copy of Caribbean Vegan, read on to see how you can enter this, my first, giveaway! 🙂

I am a lover Mexican food. I made Chilli con carne once substituting the meat for soya without my daughter’s knowledge. That was hands down the best Chilli I have ever made. What was even better is that my daughter (who doesn’t like soya) had seconds. I watched her eat every last spoonful. Did tell her after though, my mistake. A wonderful spicy mixture of minced soya, red beans and tomatoes. It is now my favourite way to make chilli.

Trust me, the vegan souse and black pudding are amazing dishes! Had it from Trinigourmet herself and it was insanely delicious. Much love and props to Taymer for this cookbook as we may never have had the pleasure of feasting on these two fine takes on originally meat-based meals!

My favorite vegetarian dish which I don’t eat often enough is saag paneer with a stack of naan bread for dipping purposes:)

  • SinSweetly Yours

My favorite vegan dish is Red Pea soup. It has some of my favorite vegetables (carrot, potatoes and yams). I like it spicy so I add a lot of Scotch bonnet peppers to it but the coconut milk gives it a nice balance. It’s very filling and satisfying. Plus it’s easy to make and freezes well!

It’s really hard to choose! I love gado-gado (especially the one with tempeh and tofu) by omitting boiled eggs and dried shrimp paste in the sauce.

My favorite vegan dish would have to be Provisions, Coconut Dumplins & Tofu, Green Banana, and Macaroni Pie. Coming from a family from the Caribbean, this is an altered version of the National Dish. I really hope I win this book. I am obsessed with Vegan food and recipes. I’ve always wanted Caribbean Vegan recipes and I would be able to try different dishes. 🙂

We are so lucky to live at a time when there are so many glorious vegan recipes swirling about, and it’s hard to pick just one favorite dish. But if I had to choose right now, my new favorite dish is Lettuce Wraps with Hoisin-Mustard Tofu from Appetite for Reduction. Think spicy, saucy, flavorful, and filling. It really hits the spot when I’m in the mood for Chinese food!
