6 Weird Food Facts About Me!

16 January 2007 1,806 views 68 Comments
Ever since I started trolling food blogs I would notice writers responding to ‘being tagged’ and ‘tagging others’. It seemed so fun and cute, grade school and cliquey. As someone who was always picked last in P.E. (gym class) and was never much of a social butterfly, I would often sigh and think, “gee it sure must be fun to be ‘tagged’”. So you can imagine the size of the grin that I flashed when I was tagged last night by Rachel of Rachel’s Bite for the ‘6 Weird Things About Me’ meme :D *cue Sally Field ‘You like me, you really like me!* :)

Like her, I am answering this question from the food angle, so here goes…

1. The quickest way to make me gag is to prepare any egg dish where the white is clearly visible. The only way I can tolerate egg white is hardboiled or as a meringue. I consider any other method vile and unpalatable. When making omelettes I beat and beat and beat to destroy all those yucky streaks. If i discern them in the final product I will not eat it.

2. As a child I could not stand any semblance of meat fat, skin, cartilage, or gristle. They made me retch and I called them ‘googoo’. I am now 30 and I still think of them as ‘googoo’ and am not a huge meat eater as a result unless it is filleted, minced, or boneless.

3. Tabasco sauce is the Koolaid of pepper sauces. I could drink it straight from the bottle and sometimes did in college. (They used to put these mini bottles of it on the tables sometimes).

4. Cheese and sweet pickle sandwiches were the best school lunches my mom would pack for me. Love is a cheese and sweet pickle sandwich.

5. The sweet pickles seem to have vanished from the supermarket shelves so we have transferred our love of the green and yellow (subliminal Jamaican propaganda? :P ) to cheese and bhagi sandwiches. Love is a Cheese and Bhagi sandwich.

Bhagi (also spelled bhaji) for those not in the know is what we in Trinidad call the amaranth plant. It is used extensively in cooking here, usually as an accompaniment to curried dishes or in callaloo.

From Wikipedia:
Amaranth greens, also called Chinese spinach, hinn choy or yin tsoi (Simplified Chinese: ?®‚Ä?‚Ä??®¬è?ì; pinyin: xi?ɬ†nc?ɬ†i), callaloo, tampala, or quelite, are a common leaf vegetable throughout the tropics and in many warm temperate regions. They are a very good source of vitamins including vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin C, riboflavin, and folate, and dietary minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, and manganese. Because of its valuable nutrition, some farmers grow amaranth today. However their moderately high content of oxalic acid inhibits the absorption of calcium, and also means that they should be avoided or eaten in moderation by people with kidney disorders, gout, or rheumatoid arthritis.[citation needed] Reheating cooked amaranth greens is often discouraged, particularly for consumption by small children, as the nitrates in the leaves can be converted to nitrites, similarly to spinach.

Bhagi

[Pic of mom and me picking bhagi brought home from the market. Picking is essential cos of bugs, worms, and leaves that have clearly gone to meet their maker  ]

On a totally random note at the end of the school year here in Trinidad the last week of school was usually a free for all. Teachers are busy grading end-of-term exams and students are allowed to read magazines and play games ‘quietly’ in the classroom to facilitate grading. One of my happier memories was the end-of-term informal UNO ‘tournaments’. I heart UNO! :) Anyway, whenever a player only had green and yellow cards it was referred to as ‘curry and bodi’ as in

Person 1: “Ay yuh have any red?”
Person 2: “Nah dread, is only curry and bodi”

*** Bodi is what we call Yard Long Beans by the way :)

6. I am scared of compote. I think it is th3 evil. My best friend Lynn of RedSheepCrafts.com believes that she convince me otherwise, I shall wait and see.

So there you have it. Six odd food facts about moi :) I hope you are not too alarmed

Now it is my turn to tag 6 people in term :) Well it only makes sense that the first 5 ‘tagees’ would be my top 5 commenters

1. Lilandra of Where’s my DSLR? (‘d’ title always changin’ :P )
2. Marsha of So Epicurious it Hurts
3. Chennette of Lifespan of a Chennette
4. Burekaboy of Is that my Bur?ɬ©ka?
5. Boo (feel free to reply here or in your blog)

For my 6th tag I have decided on a very intriguing and ?ɬºber-serious young man. I am really curious to see if he has an ‘oddball’ side at all :) I always thought ‘oddball’ was a key component of chefology! I hope I am not wrong…

So Aidan of Aidan Brooks: Trainee Chef … TAG! You’re it ;)

wow sarina, you ARE odd! (HEHE). seriously though, i think everyone has some weirdness when it comes to food things.

you guys have such interesting names for things down there ;P “bodi” for longbeans? i thought baji was also called callaloo – or is that just the name of the dish itself?

  • burekaboy said:

googoo?!! i love googoo! LOL. specially the chicken googoo (triangular gristly gelatinous part of it). googoolicious, if you ask me. i think you need to contact oxford and have this word added. LOL :)

  • Sarina said:

Burekaboy – Bodi is longbeans yes, which reminds me I have to write up my saim post in your honour :) … Bhaji the plant is also callaloo the plant.. i said so above :) There is no dish called bhaji but there is a dish called callaloo … hehehe

    googoo = :cry:

  • Hassan Voyeau said:

Curried bhagi? Never heard of that before?¢‚Ǩ¬¶

  • Sarina said:

Hassan – for real? you never had bhagi, rice and dhal? I have that way too many times a month… I’ve had it in vegetarian roti more than a few times too… Which part of Trini you hiding? :)

  • Hassan Voyeau said:

I eat bhagi but not with curry in it. Think about it, bhagi is not cooked with curry. It may be eaten with something else curried but it does not contain curry.

  • Sarina said:

Hassan – True. I’ll edit to clarify :)

  • burekaboy said:

no, here i was referring to word callaloo and not bhaji; my bad, i wasn’t clear.(but there are quite a few indian dishes called bhajis which are different kinds of vegetables prepared in a specific manner as well as fritter type things commonly known as onion bhaji — amongst other kinds that can be substituted).

  • Sarina said:

Burekaboy – uh ok :) nice to know :)

  • Marsha said:

Thanks for the tag Nikki…I will do the weird things list…
Even though I am comfortable with meat and preparing it. I really have to NOT think about it too closely when I am touching raw meat, or I gross myself out hahah

  • Marsha said:

    Yu don’t like Nigella???

  • Sarina said:

Marsha – she’s an evil jammette

  • Helen said:

    Hi Sarina,

I remember picking bhagi from the backyard for my mom to cook. It grew wild like a weed. It had sort off a purplish/pinkish tinge to its leaves.

  • Sarina said:

Helen – HI! :) Did you have fun stripping the stems? That is my favorite part :) It used to grow HUGE and wild in the ravines near where I grew up too :)

  • Helen said:

Ours weren’t huge. Now, only after you mentioned it, I remember having to peel the skin off the stems. Ahhh, fond memories of being a kid. Sooo, long ago. I have never seen bhagi here in Canada but then again I have never really searched it out.

  • Marsha said:

Nah Nah You have to tell me what she do and when…is because she marrid that Satchi and Satchi fella?

  • Sarina said:

Marsha – lolziez… look how you in this bacchanal thing :) Horning her dying husband is so not cool. Plus she don’t season her meat and wiggling her boobies and lashes at me is a major turnoff. Cook some damn food. And put salt. But I guess if that’s what’s been working for her why stop now.

  • Sarina said:

Marsha – and her accent… gord… ex lax anyone

Not that I feel strongly or anything

  • boo said:

  • Trig said:

You’ll have to be patient – I’ll respond as soon as I can. Got to go to sleep now and get up early for college tomorrow.

  • Sarina said:

Marsha – yes gyul. De first man alive. Almost got distracted because I hate bhaji but I knew that wasn’t it.

    I HATE TABASCO.
    It’s yucky :-p
    I want real pepper sauces.
I hate that those American style places come down here and all they have is Tabasco. They should have some real pepper sauce bottles in the back. This Tabasco really bugs me.
Especially when you ask if they have pepper sauce and they say yes and bring out Tabasco.

    missed me? :)

  • Sarina said:

Lilandra! – :) wondered where you were :) Figured you were filling up people’s children’s heads with ideaz an ting :D Tabasco is a joke. They bring out Tabasco when you ask them for PEPPER SAUCE? Lawd help me

You hate bhaji? :) you ain’t easy lolz :D Is easy to overcook… it’s not nice overcooked… but it’s heaven with CHEESE :)

  • Rachel said:

you are hysterical! cheese and pickles? what kind of cheese did your mom use? it sounds like the cravings of a pregnant woman!

  • Sarina said:

Rachel – Cheddar cheese!! :D Oh it’s sooooo good :D Salty, sweet, chewy and creamy :) You can’t lose

  • Lilandra said:

    I eat spinach and feta…:-p

I ate Tabasco “willingly” once in a Friendly’s. I was in school and had this craving for fries smothered in ketchup, mustard and pepper. They brought out the Tabasco (I expected this) and went searching for mustard. Needless to say roommate and friend were amused.

I noticed the tag…will get around to it.

  • Lilandra said:

Oh, I told my students they are deserving of respect too.

  • Sarina said:

Lilandra – yeah! Iz a ‘po man’s spinach and feta :D Which is funny cos I figure spinach and feta was po’ man food at some point too  OMG! FRIENDLY’S!!! I forgot about Friendly’s :D Oh the flashback :D

  • Lilandra said:

And it was a Friendly’s in Hadley. I don’t think I ever went to the one in Northampton. But I did go to the bookstore across the road. I like that bookstore.

But I did like Bart’s in Amherst (much closer than Herrells) and I bought…um breakfast…etc alot there.

I miss Amherst too. I miss Northampton too because I know there were so much things I hadn’t found yet. A new chocolate shop opened before I left. It sold solid thick chocolate drinks.
