Poll: What do you think of Wendy Rahamut’s work?

24 April 2007 2,418 views 19 Comments

Wendy Rahamut This time around I have decided to focus my poll on the work of Wendy Rahamut. For those who don’t know her Wendy Rahamut is Trinidad’s #1 celebrity cook. She hosts a weekly cooking show, has a weekly column in the Trinidad Guardian, owns and operates the Wendy Rahamut School of Cooking, is the author of Caribbean Flavoursand Modern Caribbean Cuisine(both very popular books on this site) and also publishes the glossy quarterly Caribbean Gourmet.

To some extent I have looked up to her. She has built a successful recognizable multi-armed media enterprise and has published attractive materials focused on local cuisine that are easily available to the international market and made media appearances overseas on outlets such as the Food Network. In that sense she has been a pioneer, and I really admire that :) Opinion on her work within the Trini food blogosphere seems to be wildly divided though with some feeling that her recipes are too ‘touristy’ in their makeup and her affect too ‘flat’ for television.

So what do you think? Vote in the below poll and/or leave a comment :)

What do you think of Wendy Rahamut's Work?

  • I love what she is doing (66%)
  • I have issues with what she is doing (20%)
  • I have no opinion on what she is doing (14%)

    I have issues with her.
It’s been soooo many years, you’d think she’d be more comfortable on camera.
    And that’s me being kind.

But my having issues with her doesn’t mean I hate her or anything.

Also, I think she should scrape her wares some more.

Issues. Like Lilandra. Not too extreme (well depends on my mood), but I do wish she wasn’t the only one out there such in the public eye because I have issues with her and what she portrays as Caribbean. I think her personality doesn’t appeal to me either. But if she was in the midst of a larger group of Trini celebrity cooks then I probably wouldn’t mind so much.
    how do i vote?

  • Lilandra said:

You have issues! so vote issues :-p

  • Chennette said:

I wanted to – but can’t figure out how to vote!

AHA!! So, what you’re saying is I have to go to the office tomorrow and vote during my working hours?

I hadn’t heard of her before but I’m very glad you asked this question because now I can look her up! I’ve always wanted to learn about Caribbean cooking.

and when i go home i can vote unless someone did already

hi ari :) i’m glad i could help :) caribbean is always a strange and controversial catch all term because even though the ingredients are the same the styles of preparation and preferences for combinations and flavours differ widely from island to island, even when the dishes may share the same name :) i am enjoying eating my way across the region and learning more, even as I focus on the food stylings of my home :) (trinidad)

wendy rahaumt presents her food well, but she cooks and prepares her ingredients very very messy. she also operates very selfish. for example, when she is cooking she always says that everything is “My”, eg, my pot, my spoon, my butter, my blender etc. Wendy also waste alot of ingredients on the dishes.eg, cake batter and vegetables. But other than than, she is a good cook.

Wendy – umm…I’m not Wendy

Nashu – thanks for sharing your opinion! I hope you’ll be back ;)

I have always been a fan of Wendys’ and I think she is a wonderful cook.

However, whomever she has hired as her receptionist at her school, needs a few lessons on telephone etiquette. I recently signed up for one of Wendys’ classes, and was told that they would call back to confirm my space. When the receptionist called me to confirm my spot I asked her if I would be participating in the class, since I am a hands on person and learns best in a practical environment. In an aggravated tone she replied NO. WENDY DOES ALL THE COOKING. To which I replied, I don’t think that I would be able to learn to cook by looking at someone else doing it. In a very harsh tone I was then told “WELL DON’T COME, THERE IS MANY PEOPLE ON A WAITING LIST”. She then hung up on me.

I hope this is not the kind of PR Wendy wants, with her good reputation as the #1 celeb chef in T&T.

Melissa – WOW! I’m really sorry to hear that you had that experience. Customer service is so lacking here. I’m sure that is not the impression she wants those associated with her to give!! :( Hopefully word of your experience will get back to her. Thanks for sharing.

  • Melissa said:

I should hope not Sarina. I really do hope that she learns of my experience and take preventative measures in an attempt to preserve her reputation.

As I am at it, let me take the time to commend you on a wonderful website. I enjoy reading your blogs and the recipes that you share. Keep up the good work.
