Reader’s Question: I used to work in St. James where there were at least half a dozen doubles stands in less than a quarter mile. I had 2 Every Morning. Now I’m in New York City– does anyone know where I can get my doubles fix? I’m too scared to make them myself, and I’m dying without them!
TriniGourmet’s Answer: Although the recipe for Trinidad Doubles is the most popular one here in TriniGourmet, not everyone has the time or the inclination to make it from scratch. This reader’s question is one that I am sure many have which is why I am featuring it here. As I have not been to NYC in many years I am turning the question over to you my readers. Where do you think are the best places to buy doubles in NYC? Please post your reply by commenting on this post (rather than sending an email) so that the answers can be saved for posterity and viewable by all. Thanks!

Last month I was invited to participate in the blogging collective “Kwanzaa Culinarians“. Linking writers throughout the African diaspora it includes such heavyweights as Chef Bryant Terry, as well as known foodies like Sanura of “My Life Runs On Food“, ...

I am told in Brooklyn,New York around Utica Avenue–don’t know any names but I am sure walking around in the area you will come upon doubles and rotis too!!

The best is Ali’s Roti shop on White Plains Road in the Bronx. I don’t know the address but it’s between 233rd and probably 234 or 235. Right across the street from the bank. Sorry I’m not sure what bank that is right now but I can tell you that it’s there. I used to come home from college on the weekends with orders from from friends just to go there.
Thanks for the suggestions so far

Hi there… My locations are in Brooklyn
Neo’s on the corner of Church & Rogers in Brooklyn has then daily
and I think that Gloria’s has them on the weekend – there are 3 locations on Nostrand Ave
the first near Empire, the second near Fenimore and the third near Eastern Parkway…
Have one for me with extra tamarind sauce cause I’m overseas…

Try Utica Ave Just after eastern Parkway heading towards church ave. There is a shop that sells caribbean food just before the Bakery. They had an excellent roti and if you ask nice, souse too. I just don’t remember the name of the lady.
So let’s recap take the #4 or #3 train to the Utica. Get off on the side opposite the mc donalds and the bank. then walk on lefthand side until you see the bakery. You can’t miss it. once you see the bakery look for the small parlor between it and the hair supply place. That is the place for the doubles.
Now how is that for Trinbago directions! LOL.

In Brooklyn there are several places that come to mind. Ali’s Roti Shop is one and Gloria’s has 3 locations on Nostrand. There are countless places on Liberty Avenue in Queens as well.

Lol I’m loving all these suggestions! I got this one from a reader on Twitter:

Ali’s on Fulton St Brooklyn is must stop for me when I’m in New York for a good tasty doubles. Having tried a lot of the roti shops (as a huge roti fan)I can say I’m not diasappointed with Ali’s doubles the barra is light and fluffy, channa has the right texture and there is an assortment of condiments to accompany it. Bear in mind the waiting lines can be long so I always pay first then do some shopping and return later.

I’m a little surprised that no one mentioned Sandy’s at around 121 and Liberty in Queens. In my opinion, they’re the best that Queens has to offer. D Original Doubles Man, obliquely opposite Sandy’s, has some tasty doubles, but if you venture to try them out, you’ll find that their channa is somewhat runny, and not enough for two barras. Sandy’s will give you ample channa, and your pick of four chutneys (cucumber, tamarind, regular/mango, and chadon-beni). They had this buy 10-get-one-free, but I’m not sure they still have it. Also, for ANY doubles place, don’t get it too late on a weekday, but you should be OK getting it late on a weekend, as they should be making fresh batches. I buy my doubles at Sandy’s, and freeze them (since I don’t live in NY), and when I have a doubles hankering, I take a couple out, and microwave it for about two mins on each side, and VOILA! A Caribbean Dream Come True!

Unfortunately there aren’t any places in Manhattan that sell doubles. My favorite place is in Flatbush, at the corner of 35th and Church Ave., a place called Bake and Things. You can take the 2 train to Church Ave. and walk over to 35th. – there’s a Trinidadian flag outside that should make it easy to find. They have a huge selection of Caribbean dishes, from doubles and busupshot to macaroni pie and calloo.

Any of the places on Liberty are okay. They all make good roti and the doubles are more than fine. Once had a great freshly done bake with salt fish at Danny and Kris’s place on Liberty and 120-something, but only once. As for doubles, I like best the doubles at Annie’s on Rockaway Blvd. and 127th St (S. Ozone Pk.)

Can I recommend the Royal Roti Shop on Nostrand between Pacific and Dean. Great doubles (and Pholourie and Aloo pie…) $1 each – you might want to ask for extra pepper if you want them really hot. Staff are very friendly.
I tried Ali’s doubles, but much preferred the Royal ones.

I will like NY to know that my friends and I have discovered the most phenomenal Trinidad Restaurant in Queens NY. We thought that their Doubles was the best until we had the bus up shot ( Roti ) and curry goat. Wow, the choices are endless. We will like to vote Trini Delite on 110-02 Liberty Ave as the #1 Roti Shop in New York

I have eaten doubles at all the hot spots in Trinidad and I had trouble finding a place in NY to rival the taste of “Sauce” doubles in Curepe. You guys know what I’m talking about. One of my coworkers bought one to work for me and Voila! The doubles was just like the real thing. Trini Delite on Liberty Ave Queens is definitely the new Hot Spot for us
