Trinigourmet’s Top 10 Posts of 2010!

New Year, Same Resolutions! 🙂

Happy New Year all 🙂 ! I hope that you are transitioning into the regular work week better than I am! Have you ever felt that you need a vacation to get over your vacation? Yup, that’s me right about now 🙂 Still, a New Year is a wonderful thing to usher in in my book, and I am excited for all the opportunities which have presented themselves to me over the last month. First up though is the unveiling of the new Trinigourmet layout which I’ve been working on for some time! 2010 was a banner year for Trinigourmet. Not only did I keep my posting mojo up I also got to connect with many of you via my presence on Twitter, and the weekly chats which I hold there as well as on Facebook. These chats will continue in 2011 as I’ve really learnt from and enjoyed your company – I hope the feeling is mutual 🙂

I had originally planned to post the following roundup the last week of December, but life got in the way. So here it is… Trinigourmet’s Top 10 Posts of 2010! 🙂

Ciabatta Bread

1. Ciabatta Bread – recipe

This recipe for Ciabatta Bread creates a very light loaf, soft and chewy on the inside with a thin crunchy rustic crust. I made it for my mom’s birthday and it was a huge hit. I hope it will be a hit with you as well

2. Trinidad Black Cake (recipe)
Black Cake in Trinidad is a Christmas tradition. Made predominantly of alcohol drenched prunes, currants and raisins, variations abound.

3. Trinidad Sorrel Drink (recipe)
Sorrel, made from the sepals, of the sorrel flower is fruity and fragrant. Similar in taste to hibiscus tea, sorrel becomes even more heavenly with the addition of rum 😉

Trinidad Pholourhie

4.Trinidad Pholourie – recipe

Pholourie are basically little balls of split pea flour fried and served in a thin sweet chutney sauce (usually mango or tamarind). You can buy them in little paper bags with the sauce in a little plastic bag included. So yum. When I was working in Port-of- Spain I would often buy a pack of pholourie and a doubles for my breakfast. So the yum!

Pholourie is not restricted to roadside vendors though, I’ve also eaten them as hors d’oeuvres at weddings and other events.

Trinidad Saltfish Accra

5.Trinidad Saltfish Accra – recipe

Trinidad accra are puffy fried dough balls, made of a highly seasoned dough into which shredded saltfish has been mixed. I’ve had it at weddings, gatherings, and of course bought it from street vendors.

6.Trinidadian Roti – An Overview

Roti. Four little letters that have the power to put any Trini into a smile-infused stupor 🙂 East Indian in origin Trinidad roti has now become its own entity with several variants offered to the sidewalk or fast food consumer.

7.Trinidad Pastelles – recipe

One of Trinidad’s seasonal delights, pastelles are a steamed cornmeal pie wrapped in banana leaves and filled with stewed meat, olives, and raisins.

8. Punch de Creme – recipe
Punch de Creme, is one of Trinidad’s traditional Christmas drinks. It is a rum drink, basically our version of eggnog.

9. Oven BBQ Chicken – recipe
Although there is no substitute for BBQ from the grill, oven-baked chicken recipes are in my eyes are perfectly acceptable substitute as the results of this recipe will testify!

10. Jamaican Cornmeal Porridge – recipe
Cornmeal porridge is one of my ultimate comfort foods. My Jamaican mother made it regularly for me as a child, particularly if I was unwell or feeling particularly downtrodden. Cornmeal porridge holds a very special place in the Jamaican food psyche.
